Yorkshire’s Beaches … Better Than Abroad?
With flight uncertainty overshadowing the overseas holiday market in 2022, you don’t need your passport to enjoy a stunning beach break in North and East Yorkshire. So far, this year has been quieter than last year for staycations, yet this is about to change, particularly with holidays for adults.

Beaches Close to Wold Meadow
While our spacious yurts with hot tubs are tucked away in a pretty Wolds village, you can drive, cycle, take a bus or train to the nearest beach. Wold Newton is a chocolate box village with a pub, duck pond and is surrounded by the Yorkshire Wolds.
Bridlington South Beach
About 20 minutes’ drive away, the East Yorkshire resort of Bridlngton spans part of the East Yorkshire coastline. The South Beach is famous for its lovely yellow sands and East Riding Leisure Centre. This part of Bridlington has connections to the historical figure, Lawrence of Arabia. Dog bans apply on the main stretch of beach from May to September each year.
Fraisthorpe Beach
Well worth a visit for its spectacular beach, about 25 minutes from Wold Meadow. Stretches of sparking clean sands are just waiting to be explored. You can take the dog on this beach all year round.
Thornwick Bay
A café at the top near the car park offers views of this narrow bay which has a series of shallow steps down to the beach. This beach is strewn with rounded, chalk-white pebbles, washed up by the sea. There are some caves to explore if done with care. Dogs allowed, and this beach is about a 30 minute drive from Wold Meadow.
Flamborough North and South Landings
For a complete change of beach scene, one of our favourite places to visit is Flamborough. With its iconic lighthouse, lovely walks and history, the village has beaches which flank the chalk cliffs of Flamborough headland. You can also explore the Flamborough Headland Heritage Coast, and discover all about John Paul Jones and an epic sea battle which took place in the 1700s. The beaches are a mix of sand and shingle and dogs are allowed.
Hunmanby Gap
Beloved by locals for its hidden gem quality, and because you can take your dog onto this beautiful bay, Hunmanby Gap is top of our beach list. Visitors never fail to be wowed by the views. For history lovers, there are some World War Two pill box fortifications. There is also a café serving teas, coffee and selling beach goods. Dogs permitted all year round. This spectacular spot is about a 10 to 15-minute drive from Wold Meadow.
Speeton
This unassuming village is just lovely, with its duck pond, ancient church, leafy lanes and a really wonderful (if very steep) pathway down to the rocky beach below. It is particularly lovely in May when the broom bushes are in bloom with their bright yellow flowers. As far as we know, dogs are permitted. To get to Speeton, allow a 20 to 25-minute drive.
Reighton Gap
A sloping road to the beach with huge rock formations and steep cliffs and flat sands. At low tide you can walk for miles. Dogs permitted. Allow about 15 minutes in the car to get to Reighton Gap.
Filey Beach
The beach at Filey has been voted one of the nation’s favourites in recent times and with good reason. The views to the South look towards Flamborough and the beaches are huge. The tide however comes right in and meets the land so don’t be caught out! Dog bans are in place May to September and allow a 15-minute drive from Wold Meadow.
Filey Brigg
A rocky outcrop that is also a must for fossil hunters. The Brigg juts right out into the sea and many visitors have been cut off by the incoming tide. The Brigg is also a key point of both the Wolds Way and Cleveland Way National Trails, with an impressive rock monument marking these long-distance walks. Read out blog about walking in the area.

It’s not advisable to take your dog as this is a very rocky part of the coastline. Allow 15-minutes by car to get here from Wold Meadow.
Cayton Bay
A favourite with experienced surfers, this secret cove could be taken straight out of a novel! It has a very steep descent into the bay through thick woodland, before reaching a bit of a clamber to the beach itself. Rockpools and sand awaits. Dogs allowed although the descent is steep and down several flights of steps. Allow for a 20-minute drive from Wold Meadow Yurts.
Cornelian Bay
A little-known part of the Yorkshire Coastline, Cornelian Bay is named after the reddish pink quartz semi-precious gemstone that is found along the rocky coastline. It also has two Second World War pill boxes on the sands which can be explored at low tide. The beach is rocky and sandy. Dogs allowed but keep them on leads. There isn’t any parking nearby so you will need to find a permitted parking spot on the road about half a mile or so from the beach. Then it’s a steep descent on concrete to reach the beach. This particular bay is treacherous at high tide but at low tide is truly spectacular. Allow about 25 minutes in the car from Wold Meadow Yurts.
Be Tide Aware
The tides come in every twelve hours or thereabouts. Depending on the time of year, there are very high and very low tides. Always, always check the tides and don’t take any risks.
Be Kind to the Beaches
The beaches on the Yorkshire Coast are there for everyone to enjoy. There are some simple rules to follow when you visit the sandy shores. Always take your litter either home with you or put into a bin. Take care with possible broken glass in the sand. Always check the tides. Always leave wildlife where you find it. Only take a few shells and pebbles if you are collecting them. If you are taking the dog, clean up after your pet. Be mindful of where you park your car, and don’t block driveways.
